SOUTH MONROE COUNTY
Bedford Michigan is one of the fastest growing communities in southern Monroe Township. It is directly north of Toledo, Ohio and many of its residents work in Toledo. Since Bedford is close to Toledo it is also close to the cultural, academic and sports of a big city while living in a small country setting. Bedford Township is made up of the villages of Temperance and Lambertville. The following Townships are around Bedford:
- ERIE Township - East of Bedford on Lake ERIE
- Whiteford Township- West of Bedford & North of Sylvania, Ohio
- Summerfield - Northwest of Bedford - Halfway to Ann Arbor , Michigan (Go Blue)
- IDA - North of Bedford
- LaSalle - Northeast of Bedford and north of ERIE
The following is a brief history of Bedford and links to other web sites.

Township History
|
|
In 1827, Erie Township organized and included all of the present townships of Bedford, Erie, LaSalle and Whiteford. In that era, Bedford was identified as West Erie. Bedford Township was organized on March 23, 1836, and held its first election on May 2, 1836 at the home of Levi Lewis, 166 Samaria Road. William Dunbar was elected Supervisor. There were, at that time, only fifty or sixty residents in Bedford Township. In 1890 a history of Monroe County indicated that there were only four heads of families remaining.
The Village of Lambertville was founded by John Lambert in 1832. A post office was established on June 13, 1834 with William Dunbar as its first Postmaster. Samaria organized when the Ann Arbor Railway was brought through that area and formed a station and later a village there. It was named for Samuel and Mary Weeks about 1872. Samuel was named the first Postmaster on January 17, 1879. Lewis Anstead and his wife Marietta (Hayden) platted the Village of Temperance and successfully petitioned for a post office of which Lewis became the first Postmaster on December 8, 1884. Marietta was an ardent member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union thus giving the village its name. Temperance was formerly known as Bedford Center.
In the early years there were ten separate school districts in Bedford Township, each having their own school directors. In the early 1940’s there was an effort to reorganize the schools in order to more fully utilize the available facilities, and to provide a higher educational standard for school children. On February 4, 1946, the Temperance School District Number 2 was destroyed by fire. This prompted immediate action to reorganize. On June 15, 1946 the School Board of Education organized the new consolidated school system to be named Bedford Rural Agricultural School. On December 1, 1955 the name changed to Bedford Public Schools.
